We are Maretha and Christoph.
To live at the foot of one of the world’s most iconic natural landmarks and work as Table Mountain hiking guides isn’t just a profession — it’s a dream come true.
Between the two of us, we share over four decades of experience exploring the trails, peaks, and hidden corners of Table Mountain. This vast natural playground isn’t just our workplace; it’s where we train, unwind, and reconnect with nature. One of our go-to fitness hikes is India Venster — a challenging yet rewarding route we do regularly to stay physically fit and mentally sharp.
Unlike many, we don’t hike only when guiding others. Why? Because hiking Table Mountain never gets old. Each day on the mountain reveals something new: shifting light, dramatic cloudscapes, seasonal plant life, and animal encounters that remind us just how special this place is. As dedicated Table Mountain hiking guides, we never take that for granted.
We’re passionate about Cape Town, in love with its natural surroundings, and always eager to share our knowledge and enthusiasm with those who join us. Guiding isn’t just about leading the way — it’s about creating a meaningful and memorable adventure for each hiker.
Even on our holidays, we gravitate toward mountains. Whether it’s the remote wilderness of the Drakensberg, the Groot Winterhoek mountains, the rugged beauty of the Cederberg, or the green slopes of the Overberg and Outeniqua ranges, we plan our downtime around nature and hiking. We’ve even wandered for days through untouched landscapes without meeting another soul — pure magic.
Our hiking adventures have also taken us to unforgettable places beyond South Africa. In 2024, we summited Arangieskop, often called the “Kilimanjaro of the Western Cape.” We made a video of it, for you to enjoy.
A few years earlier, we reached the highest peak in the Indian Ocean — Piton des Neiges on Réunion Island. Christoph has also climbed Germany’s tallest mountain, the Zugspitze.
Hiking in the Alps was another highlight. We explored the Blaueisgletscher and the Eiskapelle near Berchtesgaden in Germany — both fascinating glacier formations. We also ventured into two Klamms (wet gorges), an unforgettable experience in itself.
In Switzerland, we explored the dramatic peaks around Châtel Saint Denis — including Moléson, Teysachaux, and Dent de Lys, near the famous town of Gruyère. In Austria, we hiked the mountain ridges surrounding the Millstätter See.
One of our most memorable getaways? A week on the remote island of St Helena — one of the most isolated places on Earth. Naturally, we fit in as many hikes as possible. (Check out the video on YouTube if you need inspiration!)
